My family is so sad to hear this news. I grew up 3 blocks from Charles Market and have so many lovely childhood memories of going there for candy and other essentials. Charles was the kindest, most gentle man, and I always thought the store was our special place (as an adult, I found out the store and Charles were special to just about everyone in Sacramento!). My dad always enjoyed talking to him too. When I traveled home to visit, I always loved going there to see him, and was so happy that he got to meet my son. I wrote out a few memories of kids who grew up with me in the 70s and 80s, and brought it in to him the last time I saw him, probably in 2010? He seemed very tired, but I hope he got to read it and understand how many lives he touched, just in my little circle. Thinking of his family, who must miss him so dearly.
