Sardar Surinder Singh Bhullar

Sardar Surinder Singh Bhullar was born on September 4, 1936 in the village Vachhoa, Dist. Amritsar, Punjab to Late Sardar Amrik Singh Bhullar and Late Sardarni Jaswant Kaur Bhullar. He was the second oldest child amongst eight children and spent his childhood in Vachhoa. He completed his metric education from LMSD School Fatehgarh Churian Gurdaspur in the early fifties. After finishing high school, he was offered a job in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, but ten days into his new role he quickly realized that his heart yearned to be in Punjab. Upon arriving back home in rural Punjab, he primarily worked as a farmer, cultivating wheat, rice, lentils, corn and other vegetables. Along with his work as a farmer, Surinder Singh was elected as the sarpanch of the village Vachhoa and served for twenty years. In the early sixties, he married Late Sardarni Sukhwinder Kaur from the village Bakayanwala, Dist. Fazilka, Punjab. Surinder Singh and Sukhwinder Kaur had four kids, three daughters and one son. In the early 80s, Sukhwinder Kaur’s health started to decline and sadly in 1986 she passed away. The years after his wife’s death Surinder continued to reside in his village home living in close proximity to his children, siblings, daughter-in-law, son-in-laws, grandchildren and parents. As time went by, all of his children got married, his eldest daughter moved to Hong Kong, his son moved to the United States of America and his two youngest daughters continued to live in Amritsar, Punjab. By 2004, Surinder Singh and his family had decided it would be best for him to move to the United States after his Alzheimer’s diagnosis. In the early stages of his disease, he spent most of his time watching television, going on walks, spending time with his grandchildren and visiting his siblings’ homes. Later he was diagnosed with dementia, but under the care of his family, he was able to create many precious memories during his eighteen years in the United States. Surinder Singh passed away on April 25, 2022. He was known as a very patient and calm individual and will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
