Richard Albert Carpenter Obituary

MSgt. Richard Albert Carpenter passed away December 3, 2025. He was born January 2, 1936 in Danbury, New Hampshire to Leon and Pauline Carpenter. Preceding him in death was his first wife of 50 years, Bernice (nee Knowlton). He is survived by his wife Dawn Carpenter, his children Joe (Nancy), Debbie (Tom), Rick (Pam), and Tom (Teresa), ten grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

His greatest thrill was marrying the first love of his life, Bernice Knowlton, in 1957 in Concord, NH and he was a devoted husband until her passing in 2008.  He adored his children and was known in the neighborhood as playful and friendly to everyone he met.

He was doubly blessed in love and remarried in 2009 to Dawn (Addison) with whom he was an active participant in the Central Church of Christ.

Rich was an Air Force veteran of 26 years as a B52 mechanic. He served two tours in Vietnam and one in Guam.

Following his military retirement in May of 1980, he turned his talents to raising cattle, pork and poultry on his farm in Wilton, CA.  His grandchildren recall summers of homemade ice cream, pop tarts, feeding animals, playing games and adventures on his farm equipment.

He loved bowling, golf, and watching any sports available.  He enjoyed the simple pleasures of country living and honoring his country and fellow servicemen by raising and saluting the flag every morning in his front yard.

Anyone who met him became his friend.  Nicknamed “Whistler” by many friends, he charmed the world with a warm smile, kindness, relaxed demeanor, and ready hugs.

He passed peacefully surrounded by family after a yearlong journey with Alzheimer’s.  He was lovingly cared for by his son Rick for the past year.

Private interment will occur on Monday, December 15, 2025 for family at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA.

In lieu of gifts, support a local veteran or give to a veteran’s charitable organization.

“A celebration of life will be held on January 17th at 11am at Central  Church of  Christ at 6755 San Joaquin Street, Sacramento 95820”
