Harold Wheeler Obituary

Wheeler, Harold David

Born October 24, 1925 in Seneca, IL to John and Mary Wheeler. Passed peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on December 27, 2018 in Sacramento, CA.  Survived by daughters Karen Wheeler, Linda Wheeler (Jim Lewis), Terri Wheeler and Tamara Wheeler (Bruce Flaws), step-daughter Kathy Kelly, step-son Ken Kelly (Shirley), and sister Ruth Thompson. Also survived by grandchildren Stefani Cushing (David Kramer), Daniel Brown (MaryAnne), Christy Julius (Mike), Charles Martin (Margot Cyr Vance), and Caitlin Flaws (Tanner Kural); great-grandchildren Mitchell Randolph, Jacob Julius and Abbey Julius, along with several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Also survived by dear family friends Lucy Simpson, Terry Wingfield (Arlene) and Gail Wingfield, along with nieces and nephews throughout the country.

Preceded in death by first wife, Jewel (Wood) Wheeler and second wife, Marie (Kelly) Wheeler, brothers George Wheeler, Alonzo Wheeler, John Wheeler and Ted Wheeler, and grandson Steven Cushing.

Harold had numerous other friends and “friends who were like family” who will miss him dearly.  He was known for his sense of humor and physical comedy.  He always had a smile and a positive attitude. He was the dad that many wished they had and was thought of as the “last true gentleman.” Truly, to know him was to love him.

Harold moved to Sacramento from Illinois with first wife Jewel in 1952 and worked for the Sacramento City Unified School District as a School Plant Operations Manager for 35 years.  After Jewel’s death in 1993, Harold married Marie Kelly in 1998.  Harold and Marie were very socially active in their community, Capital Estates, and he leaves behind many bingo and bunco friends.

Harold loved his friends and family and loved talking, laughing, camping, and fishing with them.  He also enjoyed traveling around the country visiting them. He loved gardening with both of his wives.  He loved to read and was a very talented oil painter, as well.  He knew how to fix almost anything.  He also loved to eat!

He loved his sweet and devoted dog Angel, who preceded him in death earlier this month.

In lieu of flowers, his family encourages contributions in his memory to the Sacramento SPCA to honor Harold’s love of animals.
