John (Jack) Harney 84, of Sacramento and Reno, formerly of Knoxboro, New York, passed away October 4, 2017 at his residence. John was born on February 11, 1933 in Augusta Center, New York, a son of Charles Henry Harney and Emogene Carrie Gaut. He attended Knoxboro Union School, Madison Oriskady Falls, Stockridge High Schools and the University of Maryland. He was involved in several organizations and associations including the VFW American Legion, National Broadcasters Association, Society of Broadcast Engineers and Knights of Columbus.

 John served in the U.S. Army during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, retiring in 1970 in the grade of Master Sergeant E-8. Following his retirement from the Army, John worked as an ex-patriate electronic technician overseas. Prior to going to work with the defense departments armed forces radio television services where he obtained the grade of GS-12, retiring in 1990 in Sacramento, California. After his retirement from civil service, John bought and rebuilt houses in California and Nevada.

 He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Monica R. Harney of Sacramento California, Daughter Linda Stephens (Brad) Morganton, N.C., two sons Larry Harney (Jolee) and Kenny Harney (Donna) of Morganton, North Carolina, and Tommy Harney (Jody) of Franklin, Tennessee, two Sisters Esther Kitcher & Charlene Bugbee of Vernon, New York area as well as 3 brothers, Robert, Faye and LeRoy Harney all of the Madison County New York area, 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son Henry Harney, sisters Bessie Babcock and Alida Odit, brothers Halsey, James and Eugene Harney and one grandchild Lee Stephens.

Visitation will be Sunday, October 8, 2017 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 pm at North Sacramento Funeral Home 725 El Camino Ave, Sacramento. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, October 9, 2017 at 2:00 pm at St. Joseph Catholic Church 1717 El Monte Ave, Sacramento. Graveside services with Military Honors will be Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, CA 95620.
