Mary Charlotte Calderon ǀ December 8, 1933 - April 5, 2024
Sacramento, CA – Mary Calderon passed away peacefully on April 5, 2024 at the age of 90. She was born to Leonides Sr. “Slim” and Julia Alvarado in Roswell, New Mexico, and was preceded in death by her parents, brother Leonides Jr., sisters Esperanza “Nancy” (Cantu), Consuleo “Connie” (LaRiva), Charlotte, and husband of 51 years, Joseph Calderon. Mary is survived by her brother Peter, son Joseph, daughters Constance, Julie, Machelle, grandchildren Joseph, Mariquita, Angel, Yolanda, Mario, Santos, Sierra, Lance, Serena, Anthony, Ismael Jr., as well as great and great-great grandchildren.
Born on December 8, 1933 and a member of the Silent Generation, Mary’s life was a testament to love, dedication, service to others and family life.
After graduating from Roswell High School in 1950, she met and married her husband Joseph Calderon on June 6, 1953, and soon after moved to Sacramento where they built a life together. Settling in the community, Mary attended nursing school at Sacramento City College and began work as a nurse at Mercy General Hospital. Later in life, Mary switched careers and became a childhood and bi-lingual educator for elementary students at Smythe School where she continued her life of service until retirement.
A family woman with many interests, Mary embraced life fully. She enjoyed traveling, the outdoors, cooking and hosting family and friends. For many years, Joseph and Mary enjoyed family camping trips to national parks, including Yosemite, Yellowstone, Crater Lake and the Grand Canyon. She will be remembered for a heart filled with love, warmth and gracious hospitality extended to family, friends, and community.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a Recitation of the Rosary service on Monday, April 15, 2024 at 6:30 PM at North Sacramento Funeral Home, 725 El Camino Avenue, Sacramento CA. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at 9:30 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1717 El Monte Avenue, with interment to follow at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, 32053 McCabe Road, Santa Nella, CA at 1:30 PM.
